The online component of our consultation has now closed, and the extensive quantitative and qualitative data is being analysed. This deserves time and we will share the findings in a report as soon as we are able to.
Like many universities across the world, we have been exploring our history to understand our links and connections to the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans. You can read more about this research on our website, or by downloading the "Our History and the Legacies of Slavery Report" (PDF).
You can also learn more about the naming of the Merchant Venturer's building on Park Row by reading the "Naming of the Merchant Venturers Building Report" (PDF).
As an institution, we acknowledge that we benefited indirectly via philanthropic support from individuals and families who had made money from businesses that were involved with the labour of enslaved peoples.
We welcome the views from our diverse community.
The survey and consultation events were to help us understand how you think and feel about the building names across our University’s campus which are linked to those individuals.
Through these channels we also asked for your ideas on how we should acknowledge and represent our history on campus in ways that will help our university community and the wider public reflect together on these important issues.

By completing the survey you acknowledge that the University of Bristol may utilise any suggestions, ideas or advice provided by you through the survey, including any potential name(s) for the University that you may put forward for consideration, without any further obligation to you.
The online survey has received 3670 responses, and more than 165 people have attended hybrid (online and in-person) public meetings and drop-in sessions.
These insights will be used to help inform decisions by the University about whether buildings are renamed, and how our history is commemorated on campus.
